Bathing and Grooming a Golden Retriever: essential care

Keep your Golden's coat beautiful and healthy with proper hygiene and brushing techniques.

Ideal bathing frequency

Golden Retrievers do not need frequent baths. Too many baths can strip the natural oils that protect the skin and keep the coat shiny. The ideal frequency is every 4 to 6 weeks, or whenever the dog is truly dirty. Always use shampoo made for dogs, preferably for long coats or double-coated breeds. Dry thoroughly with a towel and, if possible, use a dryer on warm temperature while brushing to prevent tangles.

Regular brushing is mandatory

A Golden's double coat requires brushing at least 3 times per week and often daily during heavy shedding periods. Use a pin brush or undercoat rake, starting with the inner layer and then the outer coat. Pay extra attention to areas that mat easily: behind the ears, armpits, belly, and backs of the legs. Brushing not only keeps the coat beautiful, it also strengthens your bond with your dog.

Important complementary care

Besides bathing and brushing, clean the ears weekly with dog-specific products to prevent infections. Golden Retrievers have floppy ears that retain moisture. Trim nails monthly or whenever you hear them clicking on the floor. Brush teeth at least 3 times per week with dog toothpaste and a canine toothbrush. For trimming, Goldens should not be shaved down; their coat protects them from both heat and cold. Only trim paws, ears, and tail for hygiene.

💡 Important tip: Brush your Golden daily during shedding seasons (spring and fall) to reduce loose hair at home and prevent matting. Good brushing also distributes natural oils and keeps the coat shinier.
